Hello, Fanaticals! I hope you have enjoyed this last week of Once Upon a Time theories. Today we are going to take a look at some of possibly the best manipulators in the Enchanted Forest, the faeries.
While many will argue that the Blue Faerie was acting justly towards Tink and Nova because they broke the rules, you have to also take into consideration what she preaches when it comes to who the faeries are and her own actions as well. Blue was not perfect despite what people try to paint her as. In the Disney version, maybe she was. We see more of her and her background in the Enchanted Forest, though, and this version is not as saint like as she is made out to be. Let’s look at why this is true, though.
Nova
Nova was a sweet faerie, if a little clumsy. However, what Blue did when it came to her is nothing more than setting her up for failure. It is obvious the Blue isn’t totally comfortable with Nova having the Faerie Dust, but when we meet them, she also tells her that the following year she will be doing it by herself. The biggest issue in this scene (Season 1, Episode 14) is that when Nova makes her statement about wanting to be a Godmother, Blue’s laugh is extremely condescending, and she then calls Nova a “dreamer”. For being the lead faerie, this seems more than a bit rude if I’m being frank. Especially since it seems like that is the whole point of Faeries in the Enchanted Forest is to become Godmothers. The look she gives when Nova asks if she can make it with all the dust also brings into question that if she’s clearly not comfortable with Nova transporting it then why is she about to let her do it alone and why not get someone else?
You know when you are working, and you have that one manager who sets you tasks they clearly would rather anyone else but you doing? Then, at the first mess up, they are very happily writing you up over it? That is what I feel about Blue in this scene and really sort of overall regarding Nova; give her a job you know she’s going to mess up so when she does you have a valid excuse to clip her wings.
Even when they are in Storybrooke, she treats her like trash over accidents. Honestly, while yes there is a HUGE difference between 12 and 12 DOZEN with no refunds, the way she judges her is really harsh even as a Mother Superior for nuns. This also reflects how she treated her in the Forest as well, as she clearly didn’t trust her very much and that last mistake could have cost a lot.
Nova and “Dreamy” were both praised for being dreamers, but then when they did the impossible for their people and fell in love, they’re being berated for it: Nova had her heart broken, and he lost his will, dreams, and love causing his axe to break and be renamed as Grumpy. Which is sad considering that his seven brothers supported him even when the head dwarf Bossy and Blue were persuading him against it.
Why would someone like Blue, who cultivates people’s dreams be, so harsh to these two? Why did she have what was clearly issues with Nova in the first place? She says that Nova can be a great faerie but also berates and laughs at her for her dreams of being a godmother. She claimed they would destroy things if they ran away together, but yet she destroyed something so pure and good with someone she clearly had issues with.
Tinkerbell
Tink’s story is so much more convoluted. Blue always preaches about helping people find their Happy Ever After's, but yet forbid her to help Regina. How different would everything have gone if she had allowed her to do it and even helped her with Regina? If Tink's magic had called her to show up to “give her another chance” then that basically made Tink Regina’s godmother. If that’s true, then using the dust to find her perfect match was a part of her job, was it not?
Blue’s biggest issue with Tink came down to who she was helping, of whom Blue was judging her because of who her mother and teacher was. Blue had clearly never met Regina or else she would have had a chance to realize that she COULD have been saved. She almost was, and if Blue had helped Tink then maybe everything that happened could have been prevented.
Before you come at me that Tink was breaking the rules, you have to think about Blue’s attitude towards Tink when she got caught. Tink literally called Blue out on her hypocrisy about the fact that she was berating her over stuff she was doing that was the literal definition of being a faerie, and Blue freaked out and stated that being SHE is the judge of what was “faerie like”.
In that sentence ALONE, you can see that Blue is more of a dictator than just a leader. She acts as though she is the almighty of the faeries and her word is law. Taking her wings for literally being a faerie, but also because of WHO she helped, was very much manipulative dictator stuff. Yes, Tink stole the dust; but Blue should have honestly been more reasonable, she could have punished her differently but didn't, stating that it was because she didn't listen to her! Blue will preach second chances, and not judging others and then do it herself in the next breath. She claims that Tink could have been a good faerie if she had listened to her, claimed that this incident WAS her second chance.
How interesting that it seems to be a reoccurring theme with Blue that we don’t know why she has issues with these faeries. Tink tried to follow what faeries do, Nova just wanted to have something. None of this includes the issue with the enchanted tree trunk either. She preaches second chances and honesty but had no issues with Geppetto demanding that she lie to Snow so that he could send HIS son through the portal for protection. While he may have had her in a chokehold, she also could have been honest with the Charmings and tell them that while it would carry two, Geppetto’s price was using one to send his own son through.
While they may not have been happy, they were also about to do the same thing and be parents and most likely could have understood where he was coming from. Snow probably would have even agreed to watch HIM as well as Emma! But Blue chose to do her own thing and lied to them instead.
What do you think when it comes to Blue? Was she doing what she was supposed to as a faerie? Or was she a manipulative dictator? Come join our community and tell us your thoughts! Join me next week as we circle back to an old fandom and look at some darker theories involved.
