Welcome back, Fanaticals! Today we are going to touch one more time on the Power of Four theory as it ties in with powers and sisters, and then look at their punishments for personal gain. While many agree that the show was really great, there were a lot of inconsistencies between powers and punishments. Come take a look!
Prophecy
The last touch I will do on the Power of Four has to do with coveted powers. It's pretty well-known throughout the series that Phoebe's power if the most coveted by many. Anyone would love to have the power of Premonition because you could see what will happen. But here's the thing: it's not always accurate, is it?
The power of Premonition and the Power of Four tie into each other due to the fact that it was Melinda who saw the Power of Three. What if, though, it wasn't the girl's generation, but their children's? Think about it, there wound up being four in the generation with the addition of Paige. Not only that, but there really weren't any demons that showed up when the girls were young especially after their powers were bound by Patty.
While the storyline claims that Phoebe, Paige, and Piper defeated the "greatest enemy" which is why they lived a peaceful life, I honestly believe that it was only temporary just as Patty experienced when the girls were young. The true Power of Three would pass down to Phoebe's line as she had three daughters.
So, while Premonition is coveted, is it super accurate? Even Phoebe had misinterpreted some of her own visions, so it's not hard to believe that Melinda didn't actually see the Halliwells themselves, but their descendants.
Punishments
Let's talk about the inconsistency of punishments for personal gain, and what personal gain really seems to be. In Season 1, Phoebe uses one of her premonitions to give an elderly couple the winning lotto numbers, but then she also takes them for herself as well; however, she was not punished outside of her lotto card being magically erased.
However, on the flip side, when Paige first gets her powers, she takes the Book and performs a spell that is immediately tagged as personal gain and her boobs inflate. My question is should it really count as personal gain when she was honestly trying to teach someone a lesson about harassment, versus Phoebe who took winning lotto numbers for herself in a guaranteed win despite also giving them to an elderly couple?
Prue and Piper use their powers on a guy (who later turns out to be a massive witch hunter) to stop a guy from letting his dog poop on their sidewalk without cleaning it up. It gets thrown under personal gain, but yet in the end it was Phoebe who had the premonition about HER death from the incident; so, was that karma coming back from her first premonition or was Phoebe going bad and that whole situation punishment to Prue and Piper?
Yet, when later Phoebe becomes obsessed with finding the father of her future child, THAT is when she is punished for personal gain and is punished by losing her powers. Why is that considered personal gain, but the lotto numbers incident was not? Also in relation to Phoebe, was her not asking Cole and the Source to get Tempus to reverse time and prevent the exposure of magic considered personal gain after it had been confirmed that Piper had died? Or did it balance out because in the end Prue was the one that died since they were warned that they would still have to deal with Death?
Personal gain has always seemed to have this back and forth in the show, and it really obscures what personal gain truly is considered. Going through some online theories, there are some people who agree that Phoebe was always monitored more closely with her powers because her past lives had a history of becoming evil; which that also has a tricky tie in with being the Power of Three/Four theory as well and why it would make more sense that if there are four in the generation that it is NOT the generation that contained the true Charmed Ones.
The theories behind why Phoebe was monitored so closely and punished more harshly than the other three also was thought of to do with the fact that her powers held more of a "social changing" element than the others. Piper randomly froze things and people all the time, and Paige even quit driving altogether to orb everywhere. Not to mention, you see Prue shut a lot of doors with hers when she was mad.
There is a whole Reddit thread from roughly this time last year (July of 2023) that discusses a lot of inconsistencies and contradictions with personal gain, a couple users even compared situations to each other to show them. Talking about how Prue couldn't use magic to get a murder confession from a guy who murdered an innocent, but yet Piper WAS while wearing the face of the murdered innocent: literally the same situation but one was told she would be punished, and the other was not. Another point was made how there were certain things that Paige wasn't allowed to orb here or away, but yet she could pull the Book from the attic to the living room in a non-emergency situation and it was fine.
This one thing is probably one of the worst parts of the show, because of the inconsistencies and figuring out what personal gain actually is based on things that happened.
What do you think about the Charmed Ones powers and punishments? Are these fair or unfair? Did they get the wrong generation for where the Charmed Ones actually lie? Come join our community and tell us what you think! Until tomorrow, keep on theorizing Fanaticals!
