Hello again, Fanaticals! As we close up our second week of Harry Potter, I want to take a look at some theories that surround the possibility of the dark side not being truly dark at times.
It's funny how they say that everyone has a little bit of darkness in them, but why can't it also be that the dark can have a little bit of light in them? Take Dumbledore, for example; everyone paints him as this picture-perfect Leader of the Light, but he obviously has some darkness in him. On the flip side, we have people like Severus Snape who despite being dark, definitely has a bit of light in him; despite the many arguments that can be made as to why he's a jerk, there are also some things in him that are good. (One reason why I have always been very on the fence about him.)
Even Harry forgave Draco in the end. For those of us who consider Cursed Child canon, they even have a tentative friendship. To me, that shows even more that "darkness" can have a bit of light in them. Let's take a look at our theories today; ironically, the first one involves Mr. Malfoy.
Draco Gave the Trio the Answer
This is primarily a movie theory, as it stemmed from the scene in the bookstore before everyone headed off to school and gets its "proof" from near the end.
As we all know, Hermione is a huge bibliophile. Her massive love and respect for books is so obvious, and while it is fanon that she flips on people for dog-earing pages of books there is quite a bit of canon evidence that points to this potentially being true. In sixth year, she goes after Harry for using a book that has been written in; something that besides the warnings of not knowing what all those spells are, she is also aghast that someone could deface a book like that. The year prior, she wanted to make sure the books in the Room of Requirement were protected and also used properly with the DA.
Knowing how she is with knowledge, and the reverence she treats books even in the library, it truly seems suspicious that in the movie she has a full-on page of a book in her hand; however, in the book it just states that she has a piece of parchment that says "pipes" and a couple other notes on it. It is with this mind that we find it to be a fan theory that in the movie when we see Draco rip a page out of a book in the bookstore, that it is THAT page that is found in Hermione's hand by Harry and Ron. Whether he left it somewhere for her to find, and it was actually her handwriting that said "pipes", we would never know.
However, it is still a sound theory considering Hermione's reverence for books, I don't believe that she would actually rip a page out of a book, even if it DID have the information needed.
Voldemort Tried to Keep His Promise to Severus
Let's tie this back to our post from Monday when we discussed Dumbledore's comment to Severus about how James and Lily "trusted the wrong person". Here is what we know: Severus found out that Voldemort was targeting the Potters and went to Dumbledore, he asked for him to protect Lily and was basically accused of not caring about her husband and child. We also know that he asked Voldemort to spare her as well.
Now, while Dumbledore had an issue with him not asking about the other two, we have to honestly think about how suspicious that would have looked to the Dark Lord? Knowing that there was a Prophecy about a child destined to destroy him and knowing that James and Severus were rivals. Severus would have never gotten away with asking to spare the two men. Lily was known for basically being the Marauder's Version of Hermione; an extremely bright and knowledge-hungry Muggleborn who excelled in many areas of the Wizarding World. While she may have been Muggleborn, there is a possibility that her magical talents were well known, and the Dark Lord was willing to make an exception in her case; especially as one of his Lieutenants was asking to spare her.
Now, while the theory is that Dumbledore had set the Potters up to be taken down so Harry could fulfill the Prophecy, therefore completely breaking his word to Severus to protect her, the Dark Lord genuinely tried to keep his promise to Severus by telling her to step aside. There is proof of that in Book 3, when Harry hears his parents' final moments due to the Dementors; he also hears Voldemort telling his mother to step aside before she screams.
It is in that moment that we have confirmation that the Dark Lord truly tried to keep his promise to Severus. He honestly could have just killed her immediately but yet he tells her to stand aside. Now, what does that tell you in confirmational ways of the fact that when Severus put his trust in the wrong person, that person was Dumbledore not the Dark Lord. Maybe the Dark Lord wasn't as dark as we think; or he wasn't below using people as a reward system.
What do you think? Can the dark have moments of light in them, just like the light can have moments of dark? Did Draco possibly know what was going to happen and find a way to help? Is this more proof that the "wrong person" to trust was Dumbledore and not Peter or the Dark Lord? Did Harry Potter have an unseen aid? Come join our community, tell us what you think.
