Cubone: Cutest Pokémon, or Darkest History? (Dark Theory)

Happy Monday, Fanaticals! This week is going to be an exciting one, as we dive into Pokémon! This week is primarily going to cover more about the cute little Pokémon creatures themselves, with a touch of the characters, but not a lot of the storylines.

Today is a bit of a darker post as we look into some fan theories origins of Cubone; these theories have a lot of death undertones in them.

Let's get started!

Cubone is Abandoned by Its Mother

Obviously, Cubones have to originate from somewhere. There are two different theories as two exactly where they originate from. Either way, the common agreement is that the Cubone is a baby Pokemon who loses its mother, generally by death.

One theory is that it is a baby Kangaskhan. This theory has some merit, as all we know is that the babies live in their mother's pouch, the same way a baby Kangaroo does. As we don’t see the actually baby until the Mega Evolution, this is something that could be valid; especially when you consider that Cubone keeps its face hidden.

The other theory is that it is a baby Charmander who lost its mother, causing it to either lose or never receive its flames. This makes it seem similar to real life, as a baby would rely on its mother, so a baby Charmander might rely on its mother for its first flames.

Cubone Wears Its Mother

While I think Cubone is the most adorable Pokémon out there, I never thought about what the skull on its head is or where it is from. This theory stays the same, whether you lean towards the Kangaskhan or Charmander theory.

At the end of the theories of the loss of mother, it is stated that it takes its mother's skull and wears it as a mask. This would mean that the skull is not a natural attribute, thought I don't recall ever actually having seen a Cubone without a skull.

This is something that is actually confirmed in a Pokédex entry in Pokémon Yellow.

Cubone and Kangaskhan Connections

The only thing connecting a Cubone closer to a baby Kangaskhan than a baby Charmander, is the theory that after FEMALE Marowak, it will evolve into a Kangaskhan. This would actually mean that being a Cubone is a true circle of life, rather than a traumatic accident.

It would also mean that a Kangaskhan is destined to die the moment a female Kangaskhan becomes pregnant she is destined to die, and her baby will take her skull. Which means that all adult Kangaskhans we see are either female who have not had a baby, or the theory is incorrect and ALL Marowaks evolve into Kangaskhans.

Cubone and Charmander Connections

While there are connections to a Cubone being closer to a Kangaskhan than a Charmander, it has also been pointed out by fans that the skull that Cubone wears is actually the exact shape and size of a Charizard.

However, this would make Cubone's exisistance extremely traumatic as, unlike the Kangaskhan, there would be no evolution into a Charmander, unless it finds its flame again. However, we also know that when the Cubone skull shakes, it is in mourning for the mother it lost. Something that would be very hard to counteract to find that lost flame.

What other connections do you know of in relation to Cubone? What other theories of origin are out there? Come join our community and give us your thoughts! Until tomorrow, keep on theorizing, Fanaticals!

I onestly love the charmander version better myself because to me the skull looks more similar to a charizard than a kangaskhan.

Same. I actually found this theory first with Charmander and it just makes more sense to me.
